Tingo María

Húanucosta pari tuntia mutkasta tietä pohjoseen ja maisemat muuttuvat täysin. Tingo María on jo selva altaa, viidakon ja vuoriston välimaastoa. Se on myös nukkuvan kaunottaren (la bella durmiente) koti. Kaunotar näkyy kuvassa.

Two hours bumpy road from Huánuco and the landscape changes totally. Tingo María is selva alta; people call it the gate to the jungle because it´s a mixture of sierra and selva. It´s also the home of sleeping beauty (la bella durmiente). You can see her in the picture below.

Matkalla näkyi paljon perhosia. Olivat kuitenkin kovin vikkeliä, yhdestä sain kuvan lehden läpi...

There were many butterflies on the way but they were too fast for me, still managed to get one picture through a leave...

Cueva de lechuzas

Tämä oli hämmentävä näky: joku majavan näköinen elukka (picuro) polkupyörän tarakalla tarraamassa ajajan selkään. Kävi ilmi, että eläin oli sama jota jotkut porukastamme olivat juuri hetki aikaisemmin syöneet. On taas näitä suloisia paikallisia herkkuja...

Confusing indeed: some kind of beaver-looking animal (picuro) sitting behind a guy on a bike. Turned out to be the same animal some guys from our group had just eaten in a restaurant we went to. Another lovely local delicatess...

Todellinen herkku oli kaakao-hedelmä. Valkoinen mömmö syödään (maistuu ihan karkilta!), ja siemenistä valmistetaan kaakaota.

A real delicatess was the cacao fruit. You can eat the white part of the fruit, they use the seeds to produce cacao.


Kävimme myös vierailulla erään yhteisön luona, jotka olivat muuttaneet Tingo Maríaan kauempaa viidakosta. Sade vei heidän asumukset, ja paikallishallinto oli rakennuttanut pieniä taloja yhteisön käyttöön.

We also visited a community who had recently moved to Tingo María. The rains destroyed their houses up in the jungle, now they live in small houses the local government built for them.
